In 1839, just two years after Victoria became queen of Great Britain and Ireland, the medium of photography was announced to the world. This exhibition explores the relationship between the new art form and the queen, whose passion for collecting photographs began in the 1840s. On display are rare daguerreotypes, private portraits of the Royal Family, and a selection of prints by early masters of photography. Through June 8.
Devoted to the artistic potential of the natural environment as well as to its preservation, Ansel Adams became one of the best-known photographers in the world. This exhibition from the Department of Photographs collection draws from a recent acquisition of a Museum Set Edition of Fine Prints donated by Carol Vernon and Robert Turbin. These prints are placed beside others made earlier in Adams's career, providing an opportunity to see how his printing style changed over the decades, while also offering an understanding of how the artist reflected back on his work in order to shape its future reception. Through July 20, 2014.
The exhibition examines football—nicknamed "the beautiful game" by one sports commentator—and its significance in societies around the world. As a subject, football touches on issues of nationalism and identity, globalism and mass spectacle, as well as the common human experience shared by spectators from many cultures. Celebrating the sport on the eve of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the exhibition includes approximately thirty artists from around the world who work in video, photography, painting and sculpture. Through July 20, 2014.
The efforts of MOCA’s Acquisition & Collection, Photography, and Drawings committees, as well as those of many generous individuals and institutions, have enabled the museum to cultivate one of the premier collections of contemporary art in the United States.
